How it started…
Bartie Cash from Welding Academy
I started in 1990 serving my time as a Metal Fabricator Welder / Structural Steel Worker. I spent six years with my host company, becoming Assistant Foreman in my third year and Foreman by my sixth year.
During this time, I regularly competed in the National Finals in Fabrication, Structural Steel, and Welding competitions.
In 1998, I became a Tutor with the National Training Organisation, training apprentices and tradespeople in my areas of expertise.
In 2006, I founded Engineering Training Solutions (rebranded as Welding Academy Ltd in 2017), with a focus on helping national and international companies upgrade the skills of one of their most valuable assets — their employees.
Since then, I have worked with companies manufacturing and exporting worldwide, as well as training maintenance personnel including fitters, electricians, and welders in the art of welding.
I believe 75% of welding comes down to joint preparation, setup, technique, and machine settings — the rest is practice.
When these fundamentals are right, welding becomes both straightforward and enjoyable. Whether for work or as a hobby, it allows you to create something tangible and rewarding.
While welding can involve challenging conditions at times, achieving high-quality results can feel like creating a piece of artwork.
Good Technique…
As you may know poor welding can take from the whole project, can collapse / break and create extra time in rectifying welding problems and leading to more cleaning time.
Like any skill it’s important to start off using good techniques, from here you can achieve any results you want to go for, once your foundations are right.
From my experience some people who may have years of welding experience can sometimes struggle to pass tests and achieve high quality production welds.
This can be from some poor techniques / habits. Even though what they are doing may not fall apart but are lacking some structural properties and lacks the quality finish.
With a beginner they are like a blank canvas no bad habits or miss-concepts. I create their welding habits.
The skill of welding is a great life skill to have whether it’s for a job or as a hobby.
There are so many ways and techniques of welding, mine are only one way. Mine are built up over time training people within industry, picking up tips from some excellent welders over the years also.
I bring the best techniques together and these have proven to help people achieve excellent results and standards quickly.
